It’s not unusual to see the circled logo of “intel inside” whilst looking for a PC or a laptop, but few users have conceived of recognizing the logo on a smartphone. According to LG, that could well come to pass with a rare announcement from Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, during the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA next month.
Otellini is scheduled to introduce a smartphone by LG that carries an Intel Medfield chip, a first for the microprocessing giant representative. Intel has worked long and hard to develop a chip that can compete in the mobile market, and they’ve invested countless manhours and a huge amount of money in the project. While the CES 2012 isn’t the first for an LG-associated Intel chip announcement, Intel is so confident in the Medfield chip that it deserves the special attention.
LG and Intel joined forces last year and announced an Intel chip-bearing smartphone, but eventually, the market dried up for the combination, and the project was dropped. That didn’t keep Intel from improving, however.
The mobile device market – whether a laptop, tablet or smartphone – is tied so closely with silicone chips that another material-based chip has a difficult time gaining momentum. Nvidia, Samsung, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments all use chips licensed by Britain’s ARM Holdings. The silicone-based chips are renoun for their efficiency and performance.
Even Elpida’s new chip which uses even less power and grants faster speeds is silicone-based.
Intel and Google announced a partnership in September 2011 that promised an Intel chip in an Android device in 2012. So far, the availability date for the unnamed Android mobile phone is in March; location: Unknown.
Looks like it might actually happen next year, and we at mobilephones.org.uk are very anxious to see them perform!
No wonder CES is one of the top events in the electronics world, eh?
