Mastered in Nokia N9‘s failed handset, Swype technology has been revived in Samsung’s Swype-Beta software that tags voice-to-text software Dragon along for the ride. Now iOS fans might get a Swype-like technology on iPhones.

While Nokia’s Swype was integrated originally with its MeeGo operating system, a developer with chwpn took inspiration from the innovative user interface that forewent hunting for the right icon or menu item and created a Swype-inspired iOS app called Zephyr.

The Zephyr app provides thumb action switching from task to app to task, making multitasking less time consuming, easier to coordinate and faster to operate than many ‘push icon or find menu item’ functions.

Chpwn is justifiably proud of Zephyr, saying,

“I think this is probably the most efficient way to multitask on the iPhone.”

The app currently sells for $2.99 US and is somewhat limited in its functionality. However, the developer is quick to add that more gestures are coming soon.

Zephyr is currently available on Cydia, so you’d have to jailbreak your iPhone to download and enjoy it. If you opt to download the app, ensure your iPhone is already out of warranty before you break it loose.

What is jailbreaking, you ask? Well, first, let’s differentiate jailbreaking from unlocking a mobile phone. If you want your flip phone or your smartphone to work on same-basis networks but different providers, you can unlock the service parameters on a mobile phone. That’s simply entering a code into the device, though your carrier probably prohibits it while under contract.

By same-basis network, we mean GMS to GMS and CDMA to CDMA; they don’t cross lines.

Jailbreaking a smartphone is allowing non-proprietary software to be used by a make and model of device. Unlocking allows different networks; jailbreaking allows different software.

If you attempt to jailbreak a smartphone, be very careful: If the device is under warranty, consider it past tense. If you damage the device in a jailbreak attempt, toss the phone: It can’t be repaired.
