The tablet-style addition to the BlackBerry range, which is set to launch as the PlayBook, is set to cost around £312, the equivalent of $500, according to Research in Motion Chief Executive Jim Balsillie.
The BlackBerry PlayBook will directly rival the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab when it hits stores at the beginning of next year and Mr Balsillie revealed its pricing strategy during an interview with a Korean journalist.
The UK will be getting the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet shortly after it first makes its appearance Stateside, although the price is unlikely to exactly mirror the conversion technique used above and could end up costing around £500 as manufacturers often directly translate pricing regardless of the exchange rates.
Of course the PlayBook will not just be facing off against Samsung and Apple, but several other mobile manufacturers will be launching tablets with similar specs over the next 12 months, including Motorola and Acer.
Since more than four million iPads have been sold since launch, it is Apple who holds sway over the market, but with the Galaxy Tab outpacing it with specs allowing users to make phone calls and indulge in video chats, there is still room for competitors to develop their own niche.
