Lenovo has just announced four new Android-powered smartphones, beating rivals to make the first major smartphone announcement of 2014. Three of the devices are mid-range priced smartphones with impressive quad-core processors, while the fourth is a high-end 5.5 inch handset. You can pick of all but the high end smartphone today, while the more expensive Lenovo Vibe Z will be available from February.

Lenovo’s latest announcement comes a few days prior to the CES 2014 event. The Consumer Electronics Show, which takes place annually at the beginning of the year, showcases the latest devices and components from electronics companies around the world. It’s frequently the place to launch new smartphones, but with so many new products announced at one time things can get busy and many new handsets can get lost in the sheer quantity of new gadgets released. Lenovo has obviously anticipated this stampede of new product launches and announced their line up a few days earlier to ensure press coverage.

The lowest cost phone in the latest announcement is the A859. Priced at only $219 USD this phone comes with a budget price, but not budget specs. It manages to pack in a five inch 720p HD screen, alongside a quad-core MediaTek 6582 processor, two cameras — the rear one is 8 megapixels — and 8 GB of on board storage. For those who like travelling or just have two numbers for another purpose, there’s dual-SIM computability.

Ever so slightly more expensive — by $10 to be precise — is the S650. This is one of two S range phones that Lenovo has announced today. The S650 comes with a MediaTek Quad Core processor alongside 8 GB of internal storage, an 8 megapixel main camera, a front facing camera and a 4.7 inch gHD 960×540 screen. It also comes with an attractive new design — but more on that later.

The S930 is the largest of the phones Lenovo has announced today, coming in with a phablet sized six inch screen. It comes with a 1280×720 HD display, quad-core MediaTek processor, and similar specs to the S650 including 8 megapixel main camera, front facing camera, 8 GB of storage and the new design. On top of this it also has two impressive speakers powered by Dolby Digital Plus. This should create an incredibly immersive environment for watching Hollywood blockbusters on.

The star of the show today is however the new Lenovo Vibe Z. Unlike the other models announced today Lenovo has opted to go with the most trusted name in smartphone processors — Qualcomm — and have chosen an incredibly powerful quad-core 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 to power this handset. This works in combination with 2 GB of RAM to offer unparalleled performance.

The Lenovo Vibe Z is also the first phone from the company to come with LTE 4G which delivers download speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s. On board this phone is also 16 GB of internal storage, which is great for storing photos taking with the 13 megapixel rear camera which comes with a great f/1.8 aperture — making the phone perfect for capturing low light imagery. There’s also a 5 megapixel front facing camera, and you can view all your photos on an impressive Full HD 1080p 5.5 inch screen which delivers a pixel density of 400 ppi. The phone goes on sale in February prices at $549.
