A selection of names for what could be upcoming smartphones from Palm has leaked, suggesting that the first batch of mobiles based on WebOS 2.0 could have a distinctly aquatic theme.
This theme is hinted at because the codenames Mantaray and Stingray have surfaced, thanks to investigations carried out by WebOS Internals. Along with these nautical monikers were found Broadway and Windsor, which is definitely a different direction in Palm’s nomenclature.
What is most significant about these discoveries is that they suggest several smartphones are being lined up by the HP-owned manufacturer to support a full-on assault of devices based on the new WebOS 2.0 platform, which made its debut on the Palm Pre 2.
The Palm Pre and the original WebOS were greeted with positive reviews from most media outlets thanks to the integration of multitasking, although the phone itself failed to find mainstream success.
Whether or not HP will be able to use its financial might to catapult the next batch of Palm mobiles into the stratosphere remains to be seen, but these leaks imply positive things for the future and diversity of the smartphone market as a whole. Expect to see the outlandish nametags ditched by the time they come to market.
