A smartphone from Sony Ericsson bearing the PlayStation branding has been rumoured for a while, but now leaked pictures and specs detailing a prototype of the device have surfaced online, suggesting that it is close to being a reality.
Eager fans of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) devices will be aware that a PSP2 is also the subject of heavy speculation at the moment despite the fact that Sony has yet to officially announce the existence of any such device. It is now being asserted that the PSP Phone is going to be an entirely separate product from this gaming-focused device.
From the pictures and reported specs it looks like the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone will run Android and according to Engadget it will be using version 3.0 of Google’s mobile operating system.
Inside the phone a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM will power the apps and games while a screen of around four inches will give users a windows on the action, giving it decent specs. The phone will also feature a slider design, much like the PSP Go, which allows a physical controlpad to be integrated.
Interestingly the PlayStation Phone will apparently ditch the analogue control sticks of its forebears in the name of slimming down, replacing these instead with a touch trackpad.
