According to a Dutch analyst, Apple may be considering purchasing TomTom, known map and GPS manufacturer. This measure would be a bid to improve the map service provided by the Maps iOS app, and also to restore credibility to the app after the disaster that was its launch.
The Maps app came under heavy attack after its launch earlier this year. Apple’s product was the subject of ridicule and their decision of out-casting the Google Maps app in favor of their own was one of the main criticisms pointed at the new iPhone 5.
TomTom is apparently not in the best financial shape, so a deal with Apple would be welcome around those parts. On Apple’s side, acquiring TomTom would definitely be a boost to their Maps system, since the company is one of the most popular and most efficient provider of maps and of GPS devices.
